    Medieval and early modern English history was my area of study in university & my friend took me to this movie in theaters just to watch me squirm. I do remember being impressed with the way Marians estate was set up and how she knew how to run everything which would’ve been accurate for women in the time of the Crusades

    Another reason a common longbowman might not pass as a knight is the language difference. English nobility at the time spoke (old) French and peasants spoke (old) English. However, this wouldn't make for a very good film plot point unless it's monty python

    This couldn't be saved in this day in age. Nasa has become a playground for daddies little girls, and have lost the professional and focused edge that these men had. I wouldn't give 10 cents to be monitored today by Nasa vaginas.

    8:00 I have to correct the uploader on this. I saw some of the scenes from this film. In one, the protagonist is being chased through the jungle. Near the end, he arrives at the shoreline. In the distance we see Spanish ships about to land. That tells you that this film takes place sometime in the early 1500's. By that time, smallpox would have been present among the native population. Millions died who had never even seen a European. The disease was a harbinger of things to come. The film got it right.

    LTG Moore and many of the surviving veterans returned to the battlefield 28 years later. They actually met and discussed the battle with former NVA commanders. Ironically, Vietnam claims to be a communist government but their economy is modeled after the United States.

    There were people , especially in rural areas that were actually shielded from that kind of segregation. When my wife and I were first driving down to Fort Knox, KY for the Armor Officer’s Basic Course in 1976, she was shocked at crosses burning on school grounds, over bussing in Louisville. As a college grad, she was well aware of the Civil Rights movement but was stunned, that 10 years later it was still going on.

    The whole plot doesn't make any sense. The German Army is withdrawing without British side knowing or even noticing it. However, one British Battalion has not only discovered what's happening, but already went on advancing on the heels of Germans. How could this Battalion commander set his unit advancing, without order from above? But if the order was given, how nobody in other battalions know nothing about German withdrawal? And how this other unit (with this lone soldier from Indian Army on a truck among British Tommys) has crossed the no-mans-land criss-crossed by trenches and riddled with shell holes? They had to build a road across the front line in order to cross it with lorries? How come nobody knows anything, yet everybody is already in motion?

    Probably worth noting that 'oh, stupid dictator' is often wrong. Regarding order 227: this was issued on July 28th 1942, as the Axis had advanced about 500 kilometers in one month, from Donetsk all the way to Kalach, about 100 km from Stalingrad, as well as taking Rostov... against little resistance. The Red Army had gotten a mentality that they could retreat forever, and a few cowards running would easily cause a rout. At this rate, the Axis would soon solidify a line along the Don&Volga, long before the USSR had any capacity for a strong counter-attack. That would cut off the Caucasus. Both dictators understood that the supplies there, especially food and oil, were likely to turn the war decisively in the Axis' favor. Hence the order was given. It wasn't the cartoon it's portrayed to be, mass-murdering their own troops. Rather, the purpose was to shoot those "soldiers" who were eager to run away and spread panic, *before* it could infect others and turn into a rout. It was fairly rare: from what I can find, approximately 3000 soldiers were executed in the period (up to late '42), among 1.2 million soviet casualties overall, so it was a small fraction. Penal batallions were used far more extensively, but these are likewise not the cartoons we're often given. They got the most dangerous jobs to prove their worth and make amends for an earlier failure, but the orders were still sensible. Stalin was well aware - and even says in order 227 - that the USSR no longer had such manpower to waste, exactly because they gad given up so much land and population up to that point.

    • @sorsocksfake
      @sorsocksfake 22 години тому

      I'd guess Maria's letter was altered because most western audiences wouldn't intuit its offensiveness to the state atheism of the USSR. Through Stalin's reign the church had been nearly forced to close entirely, and though he had relaxed that during the War (seeing its morale impact), it was still an enemy of communism. She makes very clear where she stands on that... and giving the money to the church is quite a slap in the face. On the other hand, it would be hard to predict Stalin's opinion. He was a fanatical zealot, but he was not a purist or theorist. He got things done, and was willing to make pragmatic compromises. So while it's definitely an insult, it could well be that Stalin didn't mind that much. He got what he wanted, someone showed a spine without being an actual problem. Idk, but plenty a strongman kinda appreciates that... they have contempt for lackeys.

    Regardless of the authenticity, accuracy, or any lack thereof, one of my biggest criticisms of this movie is their choice to use what is in my opinion, the least interesting year of the war in my opinion as their backdrop. Literally any other year would have been better but the obvious choice would've been 1916. I can't help but think they picked 1917 because its the easiest to convey. 1916 would've been monumental and Herculean in scope and similar with 1914 or 1918. It's just kind of a meh period infantry wise.

    German soldier here: A small addition/correction about the Edelweiss: The Edelweiss is still worn by Gerbirgsjäger roday. And there are some cases in which a Fallschirmjäger could wear an Edelweiss. Either he did basic as a Gebirgsjäger and then became a Fallschirmjäger, or he went through a certification called „Heeresbergführer“ (army mountain guide) as a paratrooper. In both cases he would wear his maroon beret and paratropper insignia, plus an Edelweiss.

    There is a school of thought that believes the first man, on the first scene was actually the killer. The theory is he was dumping her when he realized there was someone coming his way, so covered for his presence by pretending to find her. He wore a dark, leather apron in his work ( a butcher), and had a violent history with the local street walkers, who called him "leather apron".

    This youtuber was clearly in fantasy land thinking that the movie was about the collapse of the Mayan empire. It was really set in the Aztec empire and Mel Gibson just stole the most flashy things about the Maya (pyramids, fashion) to make movie more visually interesting. Besides, 99% of the movie was about some guy that got captured, enslaved and then escaped through the jungles as he was being chased and hunted down. He was driven by his will to save his family. What's more unbelievable is how his woman was able to survive in a deep hot hole for days without food and water pregnant and with a child!

The battle scenes are shot with minimal camera movement so you can see and feel the action, unlike today's directors who use too much disorienting handheld camera and jump cuts.

    Militia are not regular army hence are not held by the rules of regular army. Instead they are volunteers thar have been motivated by a leader or a cause. Their units tended to organized of men from the same area so that their "word" was a powerful agreement that any dereliction of would follow them by word of mouth for their entire life. "Terms" of service is absolutely historical and is supported by the same militia service in the Revolution and the Civil War. Your presentation literally speaks of the French commander having to deal with his militia having to return home for harvest so their should be no issue with them demonstrating the same with the British colonists.
